- What's the very first thing I should do when I arrive?
- Sort your address, then book a gemeente (municipality) registration appointment, it gives you your BSN, which everything else depends on. See our first-30-days checklist. Read more →
- What is a BSN and why does everyone keep asking for it?
- It's your burgerservicenummer, a personal ID number issued when you register at the gemeente. Taxes, healthcare, banking and government services all run on it. Read more →
- Is the 30% ruling still 30%?
- Yes for 2025 and 2026. From 1 January 2027 it drops to 27% for most people, though those who started in 2023 or earlier keep 30%. Full details in our Money section. Read more →
- Can I drive on my Indian licence?
- For 185 days after registering. After that, most Indians must retake the Dutch test, UNLESS you have the 30% ruling, which lets you swap your licence with no test at all. Read more →
- Is health insurance really mandatory?
- Yes. Everyone living or working here must buy Dutch basic health insurance within 4 months of their permit start date. It costs around €155–165/month, and many newcomers qualify for the zorgtoeslag allowance. Read more →
- Can I keep my Indian passport if I become Dutch?
- No, India doesn't allow dual citizenship, so naturalising as Dutch means giving up your Indian passport (most people get an OCI card instead). Permanent residence is the alternative that keeps your Indian citizenship. Read more →
- Which city should I live in?

- How can I bring my parents to visit?
