Opening a Dutch bank account

Which bank to open, and which you can open before you even have an address. Plus why a Dutch IBAN and iDEAL matter from day one.

5 min read Updated August 2026

You'll want a Dutch IBAN quickly, salary, rent, insurance and nearly every subscription here run on direct debits (automatische incasso) and iDEAL payments that need a local account.

Choosing a bank

  • ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, the big three. English onboarding is available; you'll generally need your BSN and proof of address.
  • bunq, a Dutch digital bank you can often open before your address is settled, with a real Dutch IBAN. Great as a first account.
  • Revolut / N26, handy for multi-currency and early setup, though not a full substitute for a Dutch account for some direct debits.

Get iDEAL-ready fast

iDEAL is the default way to pay for almost everything online in the Netherlands, and it needs a Dutch bank account. Opening even a digital account early removes a surprising amount of day-one friction.

Questions & answers

Can I open a Dutch bank account before I even arrive?
Yes, and it removes a lot of day-one friction. Digital banks like bunq let you open a real Dutch IBAN online before you land, which is handy for setting up salary and rent. Most full traditional accounts still need your BSN and address, so the usual route is a digital account first (bunq or Revolut), then a big bank like ING or ABN AMRO once you're registered.
