Income tax & your payslip

The 2026 tax brackets, what loonheffing means, and the credits (heffingskortingen) that quietly boost your take-home pay.

6 min read Updated August 2026

Dutch payslips look intimidating, but the system is logical. Your income tax and social contributions are bundled into loonheffing, which your employer withholds every month, so most people never file a scary lump-sum bill.

2026 income tax brackets (box 1, below state-pension age)

Taxable incomeRate
Up to €38,88335.75%
€38,883 – €78,42637.56%
Above €78,42649.50%

The lower brackets include national-insurance premiums (AOW pension, etc.), which is why the first rate looks higher than a pure income-tax rate would.

The credits that help you

  • Algemene heffingskorting (general tax credit), up to about €3,115 in 2026, tapering as income rises.
  • Arbeidskorting (employment credit), up to about €5,685 for people in work, also income-dependent.
  • These are applied automatically through payroll, so your monthly withholding already reflects them.

File your aangifte anyway

Even as an employee, submitting an annual tax return (aangifte, via DigiD around March) often results in a refund, deductible items, a mid-year move, mortgage interest or a partner with lower income can all work in your favour.

Your first and last year: the M-form

In the year you arrive (and the year you leave) you file a special migration-year return, the M-form (*M-biljet*), instead of the normal aangifte. Because you only earned here for part of the year, it very often produces a refund. Use the Jaaropgaaf (annual statement) from your employer; the form itself is in Dutch, but the Belastingdienst publishes an English guide to it.

Questions & answers

What's the holiday allowance and 13th month I keep hearing about?
Dutch employers pay 8% 'holiday allowance' (vakantiegeld) on top of your salary, usually as a lump sum in May or June, so budget for a nice boost then. Some employers also pay a 13th-month bonus in December. It means your real annual gross is higher than just 12x your monthly pay, worth remembering when you compare an offer to your Indian salary.
